What’s Easter all about? Is it just about stuffing yourself with bunny-shaped chocolates? Now, don’t get me wrong, I love chocolate. Seriously, I LOVE chocolate. What’s your favorite kind of Easter sweet? Actually, forget I asked that; we are getting off track.
So, what’s Easter all about? How about those bunnies!? They ARE pretty cute and cuddly. BUT, I’m pretty sure they don’t hold the key to the Easter secrets.
So, what’s Easter all about? Maybe it’s all about finding eggs! Kids love finding eggs, right? On Easter Sunday, churches and town parks are filled with people looking for eggs by the thousands. Can the answer to our Easter question be found inside the eggs? I doubt it. If that were true, someone would have discovered the secret already instead of just more sweets.
So, what’s Easter all about? We might be looking in the wrong place. The way society celebrates this holiday only seems to hide the true meaning of Easter behind layers of weird traditions that don’t always make sense.
So, one last time: What's Easter All About?
Well, I’m so glad you asked! Easter is the day we celebrate something, or should I say, Someone extraordinary! Now, Who am I talking about? Let me introduce you to the real reason for Easter: JESUS!
You see, Jesus is the reason for Easter. You may be wondering, is Jesus really so important? Isn’t He also the reason for the season at Christmas time? Does He really need TWO holidays? Allow me to explain.
Christmas is about Jesus’ birth. Remember the shepherds and angels? Remember the wise men who came later and worshipped Jesus as a child? Christmas is a wonderful time to ponder how Jesus, God’s only begotten Son, came to Earth to dwell among men.
But why did Jesus come to Earth? Well, Easter answers that question. Jesus didn’t just come into the world to feed thousands or walk on water. Jesus didn’t just leave Heaven to heal the blind and sick or give wise speeches to crowds of people. We are so thankful He did all of those remarkable deeds, but there is more to the story, and Easter tells us all about it!
Easter is all about Jesus’ death and burial. But, the story doesn’t end with Jesus dying and being placed in a tomb. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead! Death could not hold Him, and now Jesus lives again in Heaven. Jesus rising from the dead (His Resurrection) proved He is God and has power over death and sin!
The Bible tells us about His amazing Resurrection! In Matthew 28:5-6, an angel shares what happened with some friends of Jesus: "And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."
We are about to find Easter’s true importance! Why was it necessary for Jesus to prove His power? Because Jesus is God, He had the power to do something that no one else could do: He took on the punishment for our sins. The Bible says in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Every person has sinned against God. You, me, and every one of us have broken God’s law in some way. Whether by lying, stealing, disobedience, or even bad thoughts, we all fall short of God’s perfect standard.
Because of our sins, we cannot go to Heaven when we die. Because of our sins, we cannot be welcomed into God’s family or enjoy the peace of knowing Jesus as our friend. But there is good news!
Jesus, who never sinned, willingly went to the cross to pay for our sins. Romans 5:8 says, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus died to take the punishment that we deserve. But as we’ve already seen, His death was not the end. He rose from the dead three days later, defeating death and sin once and for all!
This is what we celebrate on Easter because 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 tells us, "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures."
So, what does this mean for you? It means that because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, you can be forgiven of your sins and have eternal life with God. The Bible tells us: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
Jesus offers this gift of salvation to everyone who believes in Him.
Romans 10:9 explains how you can receive this gift: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." To believe in Jesus means to trust that His death and resurrection paid the full price for your sins.
Now, it’s your choice. Easter is not just a holiday or a story, and it’s not about bunnies or chocolates. Easter is a celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. It’s a reminder of God’s love for you and the gift He offers. You can choose to accept His gift of forgiveness and Eternal Life. Would you like to make that decision today?
If you’d like to receive Jesus as your Saviour, you can claim God’s promise of salvation right now. Pray to God, confess you are a sinner, ask God to save you, and receive Jesus as your Saviour!
If you’ve made this decision, welcome to God’s family! Easter is more than just a holiday for you. It’s a celebration of your new life in Jesus! Jesus promised in John 11:25, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live."
