Many people are actually confused as to what the golden rule
is. Many are confused as to its
purpose. This tract explains the rule
and its purpose. It also states why it
cannot save you from sin. That salvation
is in the person of Jesus and not in a rule is made very clear.

“I’M KEEPING THE GOLDEN RULE”
Are you? Prove it, and I’ll give you a twenty-dollar bill. No, I’m not a millionaire. You see, I’m not concerned about the twenty dollars. Remember, the Golden Rule is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. So if you really keep the Golden Rule, you’ll return the money! And if you don’t give it back, I’ll say, “You are not keeping the Golden Rule, friend; hand over the money.” Either way, I get the money back!
Every religion has its own version of Jesus’ original rule, but they all twist it. Can you spot their change?
Jesus said: “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Luke 6:31).
Buddhism: “Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.”
Hinduism: “This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you.”
Judaism: “What is hateful to you , do not to your fellow man. This is the law: all the rest is commentary.”
Jesus’ teaching was positive. He said we are to DO to others what we want them to do to us. The others focus on NOT doing something. They are not concerned with doing good, but on withholding hurt.
So, have you ALWAYS done to others what you wanted them to do to you? Have you ever missed an opportunity? The point is, you have not kept the rule consistently, have you?
WHY THIS RULE CANNOT SAVE YOU
1. You can’t keep it. You have a sinful nature. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9). “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” (Matthew 15:19).
2. Even if you could keep it, you wouldn’t be saved that way because salvation is “the gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). You can’t earn or merit God’s gift by your good deeds.
3. Salvation is in a Person, the Son of God. Jesus Christ died on the cross for sinners, was buried, and rose again. He is alive at the Father’s right hand. He alone gives eternal life. “This life is in his Son” (I John 5:11).
It is not the Golden Rule you need; you need the One who gave it. It is not the Sermon on the Mount, but the One who preached it, not the principles of Jesus, but the Person Jesus.
Let’s not ignore the rule. Obeying it does make the world a better place, but it was never designed to provide forgiveness for our sins.
To enter heaven, you need Jesus Christ Himself, not His ethics. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God” (John 1:12). There is no other way to be saved from your sin. Pray to the Lord with a repentant heart. By faith, receive Jesus as your Savior from sin.
