Captain Cornelius served in the Roman army. He was “a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway” (Acts 10:2)
That’s what GOD said about him! Cornelius was a devout, God-fearing, charitable, praying man. His family feared God also.
And that isn’t all. His servants, who knew him well, said of him, “Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews…”
Despite all this goodness and religion, Cornelius needed to be saved! He needed the Lord Jesus Christ, who is God’s salvation (see Luke 2:30).
God spoke to Cornelius in a vision, “Send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon (Peter): . . . he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do” (Acts 10:5,6), and “shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved” (Acts 11:14)
GOOD WORKS AND RELIGION
DO NOT SAVE
Despite his belief in God, his prayers, his generosity, his good reputation, his morality, and his devotion to his wife and children, this soldier needed to be saved from his sins. He needed the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
My friend, you may be like Cornelius. You are religious. You have been baptized and have joined a church. You take the Lord’s Supper. You are generous with your gifts to charity. You have no bad habits. You love your wife and children. You are a devoted husband and father. Others think well of you.
However, if you have not been born again (see John 3:3) have not received the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, you, like Cornelius, need to be saved.
You cannot buy, you cannot win, you cannot merit, you cannot achieve God’s salvation by any system or by any amount of religion or good works.
WHY?
Salvation is FREE! “...The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Christ said, “I give unto them eternal life,” in John 10:28. John wrote, “God hath given to us eternal life” in I John 5:11.
“For by grace (God’s favor which we do not merit) are ye saved through faith . . . it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9).
Cornelius and his family heard Peter preach about a PERSON, the Son of God, who died for sinners, rose again (see Hebrews 1:3), and is now seated at God’s right hand. Said Peter, “To HIM give all the prophets witness, that through His name whosoever believeth in Him shall receive remission of sins” (Acts 10:43). When they heard these words, they immediately trusted the Lord Jesus and were saved.
Do this, my friend, and you will be saved forever. “As many as received Him, to them gave He power (the right) to become the sons of God” (John 1:12).
